Washington, DC — HealthHIV and The National Coalition for LGBT Health released the following statement in response to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announcing $26 million in additional cuts to the ACA navigator program:
"These cuts to the navigator program will further sabotage the federal insurance marketplaces and increase premiums for LGBT individuals and persons living with HIV. Navigator programs, along with robust outreach efforts, have lowered insurance premiums by improving the enrollment success rate.
Strong navigator programs ensure a large risk pool so that persons with pre-existing conditions, including HIV, can have insurance coverage. Cuts to the navigator programs destabilize the marketplace and increase costs for consumers.
For several years the Coalition and HealthHIV have assisted LGBT individuals and persons living with HIV to enroll in the marketplace and receive ACA benefits, including serving as an in person assister for the District of Columbia. In this spirit, we know how critical navigator funding is and therefore encourage CMS to maintain funding for the program and help stabilize the insurance marketplace. We will continue to advocate for LGBT individuals and persons living with HIV to have a stable marketplace so they may receive comprehensive and affordable care."
